Assignments and Syllabus - October 13th & 27th

Latin Assignment due October 13th:

Just to keep everyone up to date, the girls have new Latin vocabulary words.

Their assignment is to write each of them 5 times (this will be the
norm every time they get new words.)

The words for this week are:

gloria
Jesus
laudo
clamo
caelum

They should review pronunciations of vowels, consonants, and diphthongs. They are already doing this remarkably well! I was reminded that "V" in Latin can either be pronounced as a "w" or a "v." I have been pronouncing it as a "v" but either are correct and the girls will be credited for either pronunciation.

I am so very proud of their Latin studies! Their pronunciation is marvelous! We've talked about "American English" being a "lazy tongued" language so that we have to practice using our mouths to speak Latin. I suggest they practice with, "The top of the teeth - the tip of the tongue." They had great fun in saying this and it exercises the mouth muscles they need to speak Latin.

We discussed words being masculine or feminine. As a rule of thumb, words (nouns) ending in "o" are masculine and those ending in "a" are feminine but they also know that this is not true in every case.

They are to read/review their Latin pages and answer the remaining questions on their review sheet.

Please review what a vowel and consonant is with them. All of the girls stumbled a bit on that one.

The next few weeks will be introducing first person verbs in Latin. Please be sure to point out different parts of speech to your child so they are familiar with the terms in class. (Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)

October 13th Book Assignment:

Our first book for October is The Wizard of Oz. Even if they have already read this book, I am asking them to go through it and list imaginary creatures in the book for a writing assignment we will be doing. This book is now public domain and is available to read online if you do not have a copy.

Creative Writing Homework due October 13th:

Their creative writing assignment is to write a poem about an imaginary animal they have created on their worksheet. They have examples to go by if they need help.

They are to write the name of their favorite animal and then write it backward to create a whole new animal. From there, they are writing words to rhyme with the imaginary animal and also rhyming words of adjectives to describe that animal.

We discussed at great length the importance of being specific in descriptions and using all of your senses to describe an object. This is important because if I simply write, "It was a beautiful sky." my definition of a beautiful sky may be a sunset while someone else's idea may be of a crystal clear blue sky.

Class Work for October 13th:

We will work on using Latin to write a recipe for a fun snack. The goal is to have it sound like a spell. We will have a snack that day so if there are any allergens, please let me know.

We will discuss the importance of scientific names versus common names as we write.

We will also work on writing an instructional paragraph. "How to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich." I will demonstrate EXACTLY what they write. :o) This should be a blast!

We are learning to write to an audience as if they have never seen a peanut butter sandwich nor have
they ever seen a kitchen. This will help them learn to not take for granted that their audience has the same life experiences as them and that they must be clear and descriptive in their writing.

Creative Writing Homework due October 27th :

Their writing homework for due Oct. 27th will be a paragraph on "How to carve a pumpkin." The sandwich exercise will help them understand what to do.

Book Assignment for October 27th:

The book we will be reading is "The Velveteen Rabbit." This is also available online.

Each girl will write a five sentence descriptive paragraph about her favorite doll or stuffed animal using her five senses. (Taste is an optional sense.)
